A FEW SNAPS OF THE LIBRARY! DAN FANTE - RIP

Most people have their books on shelves in a study or a living room, not me. I don't suppose I'm alone in my love for the written word, but maybe I have a few too many.

The library in the loft!

Fortunately the roof is quite high in the vast majority of the attic, so I could go higher than 5, but my confidence in the weight bearing capacity of the loft is getting to be a bit shaky!

An overview!

Tubs 'R' Us

All blue apart from a random grey!

A bit of a pain when the one I want is at the bottom!

Now where did I leave that Agatha Christie?

The unsorted un-photographed tubs!

View from the top!

A line of soldiers!
Sad news....... I heard that Dan Fante passed last week. He was featured recently in a two by post - 2 BY DAN FANTE!

His Guardian obituary is here. Time to read one of his books, I think

  1. Sad news indeed about Fante, Col. I need to get familiar with his work, too. In the meantime, I love it that you have so many books. To me, there is no such thing as 'too many books.' I only wish I had more space for the ones I want...

    1. Margot yes, its kind of funny how the passing of people you don't know still affects you. Too many books? Glad to hear you don't think so!

  2. RIP Mr. Fante.

Side-story: Looking at the pictures of your tubs reminds me of a favorite episode of the Twilight Zone, "Time Enough to Last" about a bookish gentleman who has a passion for the written word. In the post-apocalyptic world that comes, he finds that he has all the time in the world to read and is happy.... until an "accident" happens. Not sure if you've seen it but it's a good one.

    1. Keishon, thanks for the mention of that episode. I can honestly say, I've never seen any episodes though I have heard of the series. I'm keen to see the one you've introduced to me and I've already found a link on-line. Some Sunday morning viewing I think! Thank you, :-)

  4. I am sorry to hear about Dan Fante. He had an interesting life.

You definitely have many more bins of books than I do. (I also have a lot of books on shelves in the house ... but still less books than you have overall.) My problem is I have smaller space to put them in, and some of the bins get boxed in. I think your solution works pretty well and will keep you strong moving around boxes. Thanks for sharing this with your curious blogging friends.

    1. Yes it's a shame he's gone. After I did my post on him I read a bit more about his book which highlighted his relationship with his father and bought a copy. It arrived a few days before I heard the news.

I do think I'm getting very close to saturation point now. I shall highlight the health benefits to my family of such a large collection! Not to mention scaling the loft ladder as well!

  5. Honestly, those pics are extraordinary: even though I know the figures, seeing them en bloc is amazing. I thought I had a lot... Is the ceiling going to fall in?

    1. God, Moira, I do hope not, I will not be very popular! Photos aren't great I'm afraid - the light isn't great up there, but I'll manage!

  6. Col, I'm sorry to hear about Dan Fante. Now that's a humungous dump of books (dump as in an ammunition dump). My books will play David to your Goliath though my little warrior doesn't stand a chance; not with two shelves worth of books.

    1. Yes it saddened me when I heard the news. I suppose you have to take the book stashes into context, you have chess and comics to sustain you also. Me - I'm strictly a book man!

  7. Thanks for the pics, Col. Reminds me of an old magazine cartoon showing a husband and wife in bed staring up at a seriously sagging ceiling, and she is saying: You and your National Geographics.

  8. Good to see all those crates as a group. Don't think I would visit the attic though as I am too claustrophobic.

    1. I don't like enclosed spaces either but don't mind the attic to be honest - I'm probably immune to its confines.

  9. Finally we see the motherlode! I am in awe. You wouldn't like to come over and organize the shed, would you?
