LOGGING THE LIBRARY - PART THIRTEEN

Another week, another tub, another 50 books which I'll want to read one of these years!

Tub 13

5 authors I've not yet tried, Steve Weddle - short stories, William Gay, Chad Taylor, David Downing, Ravi Howard

A breathtaking debut, apparently

William Gay, now sadly deceased

Pascal Garnier, Barry Maitland, Allen Mattich, Tarquin Hall, Glenn Taylor

Part of a series, I've not yet started

2 from Seymour Shubin, 2 from Philip Reed, Ed McBain

Wouldn't win cover of the year, I don't think.

Gregory McDonald, Stuart Kaminsky, Jack Higgins, Michael Gilbert, Brian Garfield

Peter Steiner, Antonin Varenne, Martin Edwards, Pascal Garnier, Eric Williamson

Read two from this French author - sadly deceased, both were 5 star reads

Will Viharo, John Ball, A.D. Scott, Tony O'Neill, John Edward Lawson

Autobiography of a musician and junkie

Ron Cooper, Tom Vater, David Downing, Helen MacInnes, non-fiction about rendition

Michael Dibdin, Ivy Pochoda, Peter Steiner, Joseph Hone, A.D. Scott

Female Scottish author

Non-Zen book

Oscar Hijuelos, A.D.Scott, Les Edgerton, Tim Gautreaux, Mick Herron

Early book from blog friend Les.

James Lee Burke liked it!

Johannes Mario Simmel

Leighton Gage, Charles McCarry, William Marshall, David Quammen

Espionage

A Yellowthread Street mystery - 7th in series
Thoughts on the tub......nothing here I don't want to read I which I would avoid if at all possible. I'd be quite happy ploughing through this lot, which I won't

Looking forward to Charles McCarry, Peter Steiner and David Downing in particular. I'm also happy to have located Varenne's Bed of Nails and a couple more Pascal Garnier slim books as I have enjoyed reading both recently.

50 more next week.

Pronzini's Bones added in place of the Jack Higgins duplicate book!

  1. I've read the first David Downing that 'train station' series - very atmospheric and I really must read the rest.

    1. Vicki, Downing is one of those authors I keep meaning to read but never do! There's a few of them.....Philip Kerr, Charles McCarry etc etc

  2. Am I to blame for Hijuelos ;) ? Quite a few here I'm familiar with - I'm a big fan of Barry Maitland, and it might be the kind of book where our tastes collide. The cover and title of the junkie book are most off-putting. And I read a different book by Tim Gautreaux last year and disliked it so much I couldn't even blog on it - you'll probably love him, thinking about it! I'm off to investigate AD Scott, don't know the name at all, but worth a look it seems.

    1. Yep - all your fault, and probably Maitland as well. BTW did you see he has a newish non-series book out?

I do want to hear more of your LIKES and DISLIKES (and everyone's elses).
I have a couple of Gautreaux books but he's untried as yet.

AD Scott I did a "2 BY" post on last year and you liked the sound of her...50's or 60's Scotland from memory set in and around a newspaper. It appealed because of your journalistic background

  3. You've got quite a lot of good stuff here, Col. I think you'll like the Garnier. And I happen to be a fan of the Tarquin Hall series; hope you'll enjoy it.

    1. Margot - I think you are right about the Garnier. First book of the year read was THE ISLANDERS and I loved it.
Tarquin Hall - I have heard of but have never tried and don't know too much about, but felt I should scratch this particular itch at least once!

  4. Thanks for the shout-out of my first novel, The Death of Tarpons--this one's my wife's favorite. It's about 85% autobiographical. Hope you enjoy the read, Col!

    1. Cheers Steve. He hasn't disappointed me yet! Looking forward to COUNTRY HARDBALL too.

  6. Of all your latest showcased books, I've read only A.D. Scott (A Small Death in the Great Glen) which I found excellent for the period feel. I have at least the next one but they are longish books and I fear my current slow reading speed precludes me getting to it anytime soon.

    1. I should have looked more closely as you've also got a Yellowthread Street mystery in this batch. As you know, I can't speak highly enough of that series.

    2. Glen, I did wonder if the Marshall slipped past you! I'll make an effort to try and get to at least one this year.

Yes - the Scott books resemble house bricks, but I think I'll enjoy them when I eventually get around to trying. I'm trying to calculate how many years until I can retire and devote some serious time to my reading addiction.......too far away, I'm afraid.

  7. Col, I see a lot of good books by authors I have and haven't read read. Of the latter, I want to read Tarquin Hall whose series is set in Delhi, I think. I'm also curious about "Waiting for the Evening News."

    1. Prashant, I will probably read Hall before Gautreaux, though I'm curious to see what it is about him that Moira didn't enjoy.

Whilst I was recording this one after posting, I realised that I have the same book twice by Higgins - different editions. I'll have to swap this one out, dispose of and replace, other-wise having a tub of 49 will niggle!

  8. Now how did I miss this one? Maybe because Glen commented and I thought I had too. Lots of books here I want to read... and some I have read. Glen did by a Pascal Garnier book recently based on one of your reviews.

    1. No problem Tracy, I hope you both enjoy Garnier when you get there - they are short!
