MAY 2015 - FILMS AND TV

May was a pretty good month's viewing in the Keane household. A few films were enjoyed, though I never got back to my half-watched Thomas Crown Affair from the previous month.

New BBC drama series about the restoration of magic to England - I watched the first episode and hmm, I think my wife is enjoying it more than me.

Absolutely love this one, caught it on TV for about the 50th time. Never fails to make me laugh.

Not a massive Russell Crowe fan, though I do like Ray Winstone. An ok film, but not fantastic in my opinion.

I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. I saw loads of criticism about the casting on this when it came out a year or two ago, but I liked it.

22 minutes of weekly fun!

Another episode or two of the latest series, though I don't have a clue what is going on.

Caught this one on TV, really enjoyed it, but I do like a bit of Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt isn't bad either.

Ok film, not rushing to watch it again or read the book. Decent way to spend an hour and a half I suppose, but I'm glad I didn't pay money to watch it.

Wasn't sure on this when my daughter selected it on NetFlix, but it was ok. Found myself enjoying it more than I thought.

Only got halfway through the follow-on to "Rise of " but it was ok and we will be watching the rest in June.
There were also a couple of forgettable Saturday afternoon rom-coms that my daughter selected, but I've forgotten them!

  1. Well you covered a lot of different ground there! I'm a Hunger Games fan myself (film and book) and can always manage a Jack Reacher book, though haven't sampled the film. Not a fan of Holes at all, but it does always remind me of the days when the DVD was new and I was borrowing or reclaiming it from another family: Outside the school gate another parent called across: 'I've got an empty box of holes for you, but nothing else just yet.' Everyone else was completely mystified, and I always thought it sounded like some splendid existential philosophical statement!

    1. If I was forced to watch one film over and over again for the rest of my life, it might be Holes, I'd choose

  2. You have a nice variety here, Col! I agree that Holes is a great film. Nicely cast and nicely executed. I have to admit that I'm probably being narrow-minded here, but I have no intention of seeing Jack Reacher. I can't get beyond the casting and some of the 'out there' thrillerish elements. I know, I know, but there it is.

    1. Sigourney Weaver, Patricia Arquette, Jon Voight - hamming it up, loved it!
Not a Reacher fan then, I assume! Ok, not for everyone.

  3. I saw the first episode of the BBC drama Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell and wasn't impressed. A lot of people criticize it for "too much talking" and yes, it's too much talking and not being interested in what's going on. It premieres in the US in June sometime. I plan to skip it. The casting fuss over Tom Cruise because of his height was ridiculous. Aren't they suppose to embody the character? and not dwell too much on their physical looks? At least I thought so....I started watching Game of Thrones earlier last month and enjoyed it but kind of lost track and it will probably be that way for awhile..

    1. I think my wife was more a fan than I was. Definitely slow to get going. I really enjoyed Reacher and was happily entertained for the 90 mins- 2 hours it was on. Game of Thrones is quite watchable, just to see how nasty everyone gets!

  4. Never even heard of Holes. I haven't seen Reacher but I have been impressed with the latest films I have seen with Tom Cruise, so I would be happy to see it. Glen says he has heard of Salmon Fishing in Yemen but did not know that Emily Blunt was in it. We are both big Emily Blunt fans. She was in Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise and both of them were great in that.

We liked Brooklyn Nine Nine (first season) so much we bought the DVD and plan to rewatch it soonish. Second season not out yet and will be too expensive to buy right away, I guess we will rent via Netflix when it gets out.

    1. I thought Holes might have appeared on your radar, but hey hoh. I haven't seen Edge of Tomorrow, but Tom Cruise is pretty watchable in most of his films. Salmo Fishing was based on a book by Paul Torbay, but I haven't read it and probably won't.

Glad you are enjoying Brooklyn Nine Nine - I think all the cast are superb. I think I'll stick to TV rather than DVD series for future viewing.

  5. Col, I want to see HOLES. I know it's good. RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES was no patch on Heston's classic, not that there was anything to compare. I might see DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES mainly for Gary Oldman and Andy Serkis.

    1. I'm sure I have seen the original Apes films several times over the years, I do like the modern day spin on them though. Holes is recommended!
