SEPTEMBER 2021 - FILMS (CINEMA)

A quieter month than of recent times with only three outings to our local Odeon....

horror, crime, horror

Hopefully October will be busier.

Candyman (2021)

Hands up, confession time. I'm not a massive fan of horror films. I think I'm too nervous to actually enjoy being petrified. This one I liked though, maybe I found it more thriller-ish than out and out horror.

I'm aware of the earlier Candyman film from the 90s, but have never seen it. I guess I ought to give it a go at some point. I've probably read and forgotten the source material for the films - a short story by Clive Barker. Not read him for about 30 years or more.

From Wikipedia ...

Candyman is a 2021 supernatural slasher film directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, and DaCosta. The film is a direct sequel to the 1992 film of the same name and the fourth film in the Candyman film series, based on the short story "The Forbidden" by Clive Barker. The film stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, and Kyle Kaminsky. Vanessa Williams, Virginia Madsen, and Tony Todd also reprise their roles from the original film.

Copshop (2021)

My kind of film even if I'm not a massive fan of Gerard Butler. Plenty of gun play, humour and tension here - also violence, action and mayhem. If it was a book, I'd read it. Butler might grow on me over time.

From Wikipedia ...

Copshop is a 2021 American action thriller film directed by Joe Carnahan and written by Kurt McLeod and Carnahan, based on a story by McLeod and Mark Williams. The film stars Gerard Butler, Frank Grillo, and Alexis Louder, and is set in a small-town police station that becomes the battleground between a hitman, a rookie cop, and a con artist.

Copshop was released in the United Kingdom on September 10, 2021, by STXfilms, and was released in the United States on September 17, 2021, by Open Road Films. It received generally positive reviews from critics.

Malignant (2021)

Brain freeze. I actually couldn't remember a thing about this without referring to the spoilered plot summary on Wikipedia. For a minute I doubted that I'd even seen it, which is slightly worrying. WTF is wrong with my memory, or maybe the film wasn't that great.

After a refresh, I can recall it being very disturbing even if the plot was a bit far-fetched. But then aren't all films? An okay night out, just don't buy me the DVD.

From Wikipedia ....

Malignant is a 2021 American horror film directed by James Wan from a screenplay by Akela Cooper, based on an original story by Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Cooper. The film stars Annabelle Wallis as a woman who begins to have visions of people being murdered, only to realize the events are happening in real life. Maddie Hasson, George Young, Michole Briana White, and Jacqueline McKenzie also star.

  1. If I'm being honest, Col, I'm not much of a one for horror films, either. There've been a few I've liked, but in the main? No, thanks. I think it's really hard to do a horror film that doesn't immediately go for the gore. I'm glad you liked Candyman, though.

    2. Margot, I didn't dislike either of the horror films seen, they just aren't my favourite genre to view. I do enjoy a trip to the cinema though with the family and I think it's a different experience on the big screen.
