SEPTEMBER 2021 - FILMS + TV (HOME-VIEWING)

Not much to write home about this month. A few series started or continued and a whole month without a film ...

Vigil (2021) - BBC Drama Series

Six part drama, which I'm halfway through. Tense, exciting and claustrophobic with a murder investigation taking place on a submarine. Spies, spooks, military, police and lots of conflict, secrets and agendas. Hopefully, I can sort out some iPLAYER issues and get this watched.

From Wikipedia ....

Vigil is a British police procedural television miniseries created by Tom Edge and produced by World Productions. The six-part series commenced on BBC One in August 2021. It stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Paterson Joseph and Martin Compston. The series is set in Scotland and much of the action takes place on a nuclear-powered Vanguard class submarine.

Plot
Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva of the Scottish Police Service (the fictionalised Police Scotland) is sent to HMS Vigil, a Vanguard class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, to investigate a death on board, which takes place shortly after the mysterious disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler. Her investigations, and those of her colleagues ashore, bring the police into conflict with the Royal Navy and MI5, the British Security Service.

Brokenwood (2014 - ) NZ Drama

Seven series so far, but I don't have a clue where I am with this. This show which I like airs regularly on one of my random satellite channels. I like the team of cops and it's an easy watch. One I'll continue with without worrying over whether I've caught every episode.

Deceit (2021) - Channel 4 - TV Drama Mini-Series

Topical drama in light of recent events in the UK, regarding women's safety, police murderers and tangentially police tactics of infiltration into activist groups - including hoodwinking women and getting them pregnant!

Here the police - the Met again - leave the coshes in their lockers and try different tactics to frame a socially awkward but totally innocent oddball

From Google ....

Examining the controversial honeytrap at the heart of the high-pressure investigation into the devastating murder of Rachel Nickell, a young mother brutally attacked in front of her two-year-old son on Wimbledon Common in London in 1992.

Annika (2021) - Alibi - TV Drama series

Cracking murder drama set in Scotland. Decent cast, decent storylines. What more do you want? One episode to watch still.

From Wikipedia ...

Annika is a British crime drama television series, based on the BBC Radio 4 drama Annika Stranded. Produced by Black Camel Pictures for Alibi and All3Media, the first episode aired on 17 August 2021.

The series follows DI Annika Strandhed as she takes over a new Marine Homicide Unit in Scotland.

The radio series Annika Stranded was also written by Nick Walker and featured Nicola Walker as Annika Strandhed but was set in Oslo.

Limetown (2019) - TV Drama Series

Well that was a crushing disappointment with the whole thing falling flatter than a pancake, one that had just been run over by a 10t steamroller.

Great start, interesting premise, inevitable tail-off and mid-series lull and then an ending that wasn't really an ending, because no one involved obviously knew how the story finished. so we create a bit of drama with no answers that we will either figure out in Series 2 if we get a renewal or we get cancelled and no one will give a shit.

6 or 7 hours of my life I'll never get back.

  1. You do have some good 'uns here, Col. I really, really like The Brokenwood Mysteries, so I was really happy to see that one here. I haven't yet seen Annika, but it does sound great, and I hope it'll come this way in some form.
