Col, I have never read Martin Amis who, if I'm not mistaken, was quite a sensation when he burst on the literary scene. John Irving is one of my favourite writers though I haven't read either of the novels in your tub. I do plan to read "The Cider House Rules."
ReplyDeleteSo far my experience with Amis has been mixed. Style over substance. I saw the film of THE CIDER HOUSE RULES not too long ago, so I probably don't feel the need to read it quite so soon. I'm sure I read the other one 20-odd years ago. It's one of his shorter books!
DeleteCol, I have seen the movie too, which is the reason I want to read the book.
DeleteIt was a great film - nice seeing Tobey Maguire as someone other than Spiderman. Michael Caine was excellent too.
DeleteYou do have quite the tubful there, Col. Leonard, McDermid, Neville, and lots more I think you'll like. Looking forward to seeing what you think of them when you get there.
ReplyDeleteMargot - more books than sense perhaps, but yes plenty to look forward to!
DeleteI liked Robert Wilson's In the Company of Strangers. I did not recognize S. J. Rozan's Trail of Blood, but it is just an alternate title to Shanghai Moon. That was the least favorite of her books that I read, but I really really like that series. I have read almost all of her books.
ReplyDeleteMy wife has read one of the Rojan's and liked it but I haven't tried the series yet. I've read the one Wilson book so far, but am struggling to recall too much about it.
DeleteOoops....Rozan!
DeleteRock Springs is one of my favourite short story collections. Times Arrow is fun. It's like Amis doing a cover version of Kurt Vonnegut, really.
ReplyDeleteI've not yet tried anything from Richard Ford, I think I have The Sportswriter somewhere, but I'll go short before I go long. I'm now optimistic about the Amis!
DeleteAnother very good tubful! Don't you sometimes get the temptation to start reading them all at once?
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit overwhelming really - where do I start?
DeleteAnthony Frewin? Derek Raymond? New to me. Wikipedia said novelist Frewin was the assistant to Stanley Kubrick. Raymond, it said, was a crime writer and the “founder of British noir.” Could that be true? What about Gerald Kersh (NIGHT AND THE CITY)?
ReplyDeleteElgin - Kersh is a good shout. I would recommend Raymond's series of Factory novels, though should point out I have yet to read him. They are supposed to be fairly bleak. 5 in total. Frewin and especially this book of his looks intriguing.
DeleteQuite a collection - lots of good authors and some that are new to me.... get those reviews going!
ReplyDeleteOne of the better tubs possibly.....at the minute I'm running about 7 reviews behind...that'll teach me to have a couple of weeks off!
DeleteYeah, It Wasn't About the Bike... ;-)
ReplyDeleteHaha, thought you'd dropped by to tell me you and your fellow citizens had donated some more of your taxes to good ol' Lance!
