  1. That's a Philip Kerr I've not heard of. Wasn't terribly impressed with his latest (contemporary set one - 'Research') but I would definitely return to his historical ones.

    1. I haven't seen any good write-ups for his latest, so I'll avoid I think. I hadn't heard of this one myself until I saw it second hand in a charity shop recently. I still need to start the Bernie series!

  2. OK you grabbed my interest with 'the best detective story ever' so had to go and look it up. I'm amazed that I've never heard of it, it sounds quite the book, I may have to read it. Very intriguing - why isn't it more famous?

    1. Boom - glad you like the look of the Smith book. Why isn't it better known? Not too sure to be honest - it seems fantastic, albeit a bit lengthy. Brash Books are re-publishing in Feb 2015 on kindle. Otherwise it doesn't appear to be that easy to come by cheaply for a second hand book. I'll read it early next year I reckon.

    2. The book is being republished, in a Kindle edition and paperback edition, Brash Books. They are both available for pre-order now.

    3. Lee cheers for stopping by and the info. No excuses now Moira!

  3. Col, A PRAYER FOR DYING is a good book but I don't remember reading HELL IS ALWAYS TODAY though it sounds familiar. I'll have to check it out. I like the way Higgins titles his novels.

    1. I think I have only read the one Higgins book in all my years reading - title escapes me. I picked these up on your recommendation - not specifically these titles, but because you regard him as one of your favourite authors. I'll get to them at some point!

    2. Col, Higgins' early novels are his best, especially the period 1969-1975. I think a young Mickey Rooney played the lead role in the movie adaptation of A PRAYER FOR DYING.

    3. Sorry, Col, not Rooney, it's Rourke!

    4. Rourke-Rooney ? Regardless I don't think I have seen the film - is it any good? Did Harrison Ford play Jack Ryan in something - was that based on a Higgins book, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

    5. Haha - take no notice of me, I'm confusing a Tom Clancy character with a Higgins-Harry Patterson one. (Note to self - look up facts before posting !)

    6. Col, I agree, Harrison Ford makes a better Jack Ryan than Alec Baldwin does in Tom Clancy's THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. Tracy covered the book-to-movie in her latest post. The film version of A PRAYER FOR THE DYING is rather boring.

    7. I don't think I have seen the post yet, I'll head over in a bit. I quite like Harrison Ford as an actor. He's been in some decent films - not least as Indiana Jones. I won't go out of my way then to try and see APFTD.

  4. Some interesting books there. I will be interested to see what you think of the Mr. Monk books. Never tried the TV series. Or the books.

    1. I am surprised at that TBH - I thought MR MONK was obligatory! I hope to get one under my belt early 2015
