That's a nice lot of books you have there, Col! What a variety, too! Neville, Block, Nesser, and Rankin. And Donna Leon, too. I'll be keen to know what you think of The Dinner when you get to it.
ReplyDeleteMargot thanks. Nesser, Neville and Leon will all be new to me, as will Herman Koch. Block's an old favourite!
DeleteQuite a few authors here I do not know. Here’s a question Col: In logging the library, do you find you have doubles? I’ve picked up novels in used book shops only to find later that I already had it. Then there are times when I pass on a book because I know I have it only to recall later that I gave mine to someone to read and never got it back.
ReplyDeleteElgin, I've just tabbed through the spreadsheet and I have 29 duplicate books, which isn't too bad - 29 less to read at any case. I suppose I must err on the side of caution, buy it twice rather than run the risk of not having it. No doubt I will have a few more, where they may have been issued twice under different titles.
Delete3,300 books? That's a heap of books, Col! I don't know whether I should feel envious, or relieved that my own lot doesn't exceed 500. I have some unintended duplicates too, including Elmore Leonard.
ReplyDeleteI have been looking for some Spillane paperbacks. I like his narrative style. I think Stuart Neville deserves a read too. I also need to sink my teeth into Irish crime fiction.
Prashant - 3300 is a ridiculous figure and I'm nowhere near finished. I haven't yet tried Mickey Spillane - one of these years I'll get around to it!
DeleteThe Donovan is the one that stands out for me here, on the grounds of the title if nothing else -- I must see if my local library has a copy.
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with having 3300 books!
Like Margot, I'm interested to find out how you get along with the Koch. I liked it a lot.
Nothing wrong with the spelling of "discreet" in that book title. "Discrete" means something else.
John, you know if I had a bet on which one of the 50 you might take a punt on, I would have had a fiver on the Donovan - don't know why I felt that - maybe the cover and title.
DeleteI'm sure I only blog to get myself an education - never before seen "discreet" only ever "discrete" - back to school for me then!
Koch going closer to the top of the pile!
never before seen "discreet"
ReplyDeleteYou will now see it ten times in the next 24 hours: here, for example.
Aah.. kind of reminded of a rude joke about "what's the definition of indefinitely?".... I'll hazard you can guess the punchline.
DeleteQuite a few there I recognize from, or read in, the 80s and early 90s, some I haven't thought of in years. The Schopenhauer Telescope is a brilliant title, I'll have to have a look at that one...
ReplyDeleteLet us know if you plump for the Donovan book - no doubt you'll read it long before I do!
DeleteThat is a real mixed bag of books. A lot of them I am not familiar with. I would like to get to OUTSIDER IN AMSTERDAM this year, but who knows? I have MERCY by Adler-Olsen, but by its other title, The Keeper of Lost Causes. I should get to that one this year too.
ReplyDeleteNow it is official, you have at least twice as many books as I do. I started counting one but never got done.
I only have the one Amsterdam Cops book which was very restrained of me! I hope you enjoy it, you're bound to beat me to it. I've not yet tried any ADLER-OLSEN either.
