Col, I have not read any of Sue Grafton's alphabet books and that's something I'm going to have to look into in the near future. Ross Macdonald's THE FAR SIDE OF THE DOLLAR looks interesting. Over the years I have neglected Dashiell Hammett too.
ReplyDeleteI've only read the first. I've not yet tried Ross MacDonald at all and Hammett was read many years ago before the blog began, so I can't recall too much about his books.
DeleteDexter, Kaminsky, Nesser, I'd say you have plenty of really good stuff here, Col. Oh, and I'll be keen to know what you think of the Macdonald; I thought that was a good 'un.
ReplyDeleteI am interested in seeing how I get on with Colin Dexter. They may not be my kind of thing at all, but I'll never know unless I give one a try. Kaminsky, Nesser and MacDonald are all unknown quantities as well.
DeleteI'm a big fan of Kinsey, so like to see all your Graftons. Always mean to read more Ross Macdonalds.
ReplyDeleteHave you always done series number after date? Only just noticed it, good idea.
I did enjoy my first Grafton, but haven't rushed back. Maybe I ought to have an all-female reading month at some point.
DeleteYes, I've tried tracking the series when I've logged, as I'm usually very particular about reading out of order.
Col – Hammett’s GLASS KEY is a tough one to find these days. I have a very old paperback of it somewhere. But your copy’s cover made me laugh.
ReplyDeleteElgin, I've just read the synopsis for the book on wiki and I can't see the relevance of the dog to be honest. I'm not too sure of the date of my edition, but I do like the cover, probably a lot more than the print size of these old Penguins.
DeleteAgree. On a shelf, they look like novellas. Open them and, Whoa!, dense, tiny print. Must have been a budget thing for the publishers.
DeleteI got caught out by Highsmith's Strangers on a Train which was a Penguin I read last month. I looked at the page count and thought - 2 days reading easy. I was still struggling two weeks later! A combination of print size and a lack of immersion in the story that time around.
DeleteHammett is a good one. Very atmospheric homage. Made into a movie back in the 70s. San Francisco in the 30s. Lots of fog, great cars and snappy clothes. Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteCheers Glen. It'll be interesting to see San Francisco from an earlier time than Pronzini's portrayal.
DeleteLook at all those Joe Gores. I am so envious. I can't wait until you read some of them.
ReplyDeleteTracy, I'm looking forward to reading him....not sure when though!
DeleteGosh, you've got a lot of catching up on Grafton to do. They're surprisingly good on the whole.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any Nesser, so I've just booked me a copy of The Mind's Eye (first in his Van Veteeren series, I gather) at the library.
1 down 25 to go, but I don't think she's got to Z yet! I might have reigned myself in at W!
DeleteNesser is supposed to be good, but I can't offer an opinion as yet.
