Oakland - crime fiction!
The thirteen-year-old Corbitt Wainwright's adolescence is abruptly cut short when his father is imprisoned for attacking a white man. Tragically, dreams of success through good grades and hard work are wiped aside as white society shows him, out of both kindness and malice, that poor black kids in Mississippi don't have much of a hand in creating their own destinies. Refusing to accept this allotted role, and after a deadly confrontation with his father's accuser, Corbitt sets out for California, the land of opportunity and racial equality. Upon his arrival in West Oakland, a whole other world awaits. This is a world populated by gangs and crack dealers, violent cops and street kids, and one where the future seems even bleaker than it does back at home. Against the odds, he helps some of the local homeboys overcome one of their many predators and discovers the power of his African heritage. Finally, he learns to trust his own strength.
Filled with a remarkably diverse cast of characters and written with gut-wrenching immediacy, cutting-edge street slang, and a haunting lyricism, Six Out Seven is a brutally honest novel about what it means to be a black teenager in America today. |

You have some great books there, Col. Hiaasen, McBain, Kerr, all of them are terrific. I really hope you'll like the Dave Barry; I thought it was a fun read.
ReplyDeleteMargot cheers, there's lots to look forward to here.I thought you might pick up on the Dave Barry! He must be due a turn in your spotlight!
DeleteWoodrell’s country noir novels are very good.
ReplyDeleteElgin - agreed, though I haven't picked one of his up for a year or two.
DeleteCol, is Dave Barry the same guy who wrote a humour column in Miami Herald? I used to read it regularly in the nineties though I haven't read his long works.
ReplyDeleteYes, he was/is a newspaper columnist, though I couldn't tell you at which paper. I always used to read Carl Hiaasen's weekly columns back in the day.
DeleteI love that Nathanael West cover. I have Tomato Red, don't know when I will read it. I read the James R Benn book. It was OK but I have more of the series to try before I give up on it. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood at the time. Mark Mills, The Information Officer. I really liked that one.
ReplyDeleteI've actually read one of the West's in the book for the Past Offences meme, but I had to buy it on Kindle because I hadn't located my copy. I read the first 20-odd pages of the Benn book when I first got it, I quite liked it but put it aside. I don't have nay more in the series, and no plans to get them either. Mills looks good, but maybe a bit intense - I want some quicker reads at the minute.
DeleteNot much to excite me there, though I too really enjoyed Dave Barry's columns: he's very funny.
ReplyDeleteDave Barry seems to be the headliner for a few people. I might look up his column, assuming he still writes one.
