  1. You have such a great variety there, Col! I read Watson's Montana 1945, but not this one. And you've got some Chandler, some Hill - oh, and two Rendells. In my opinion, you've some good reading ahead of you!

    1. I think I read Watson's White Crosses a fair few years ago and enjoyed it, but nothing else from him. Overall I'm pleased with this particular tub - good reading ahead!

  2. Col, "Death is a Lonely Business" is such a wonderful title; the kind that stays with the reader long after the book is read. I plan to reread it one day. I'm curious about "Stalin's Nose," having read some interesting travelogues some years ago. I haven't read most of the other writers.

    1. I like a bit of travel writing now and again, but need to force myself to pick them up. I kind of forget that I have them. I used to read Bradbury in my late teens, so it will be interesting getting reacquainted with him!

  3. Oh I hope you enjoy 9TailFox. Very bizarre. And mostly set in San Francisco (can't go wrong there).

    1. I bought it after Tracy read and reviewed it, though I can't remember what it's about! San Francisco setting will definitely be a plus.

  4. I envy you the two Rendells, neither of which I've read. I wouldn't necessarily get too excited about Death is a Lonely Business; I was most disappointed by it.

    1. Oh, I hope it agrees with me more than you. It's the first in a kind of loose trilogy I think and I obviously have the other two! I did enjoy him years ago. Something Wicked, Fahrenheit 451, Dandelion Wine - though I can recall nothing other than the titles.

Ruth Rendell and her alter ego Barbara Vine has yet to be sampled!

    2. I've obviously read most of his fantasy/sf, and generally enjoyed it -- especially the earlier ones -- but his skill set (as it were) didn't, for me, seem to translate happily to mysteries.

    3. Hmm...ok, I'll approach with caution and not build up to much expectation.

  5. I like CJ Box, and also the Charlotte Jay and Michael Gilbert. I love the look of The Devil and The Detective, though never heard of it. Must look it up...

    1. Not yet tried any of those three....surprise, surprise (the spirit of Miss Black lives on). John Grant recommended The Devil and The Detective, though I can't remember what it's about....

  6. I have several of these books: DEATH IS A LONELY BUSINESS, read and liked it . 9 TAIL FOX. Loved it. The Martin Limon books are great. I have THE DEVIL AND THE DETECTIVE, looking forward to reading it (someday). There are others on this list I have but have not read, so I hope you read and review them soon.

  7. Jade Lady Burning is very good but also sort of harrowing. Saving the 2nd one for when I need to feel really morally uncomfortable... Hmmm.

  8. Wow you have a lot of books, Colman! I picked up that Valerio Varesi book on ebook. Yet to read it though. Was watching a couple of episodes of the Italian show based on his works on MzH though and thats what prompted me to get it.

    1. Peggy more books than brains I'm afraid, but hey you know how it is! The cover of the Varesi sucked me in this time. I reckon you will probably get to it before me.
