LOGGING THE LIBRARY - PART THREE

Week three and my enthusiasm as yet remains undimmed.

Another tub and another fifty.......
A bit of Canadian crime, (more tomorrow), some Thompson's which featured last week and a Petievich.

Spencer (UK author, now deceased), Higgins (US great), Pawson (UK)

Stone (US), Pawson again and an old favourite Charles Williams

Rathbone and Deighton - a touch of espionage. Diehl's book was a film with Burt Reynolds, Simon's is a US PI book, Warner's from Australia.

Hillerman (US),  Brookmyre (Scotland), Corris (Aus) and Peyton Place!

Vietnam tale, Yardie's in London, Lawrence Sanders and Jim Thompson novelisation of Ironside - remember that TV series? Another Petievich.

Galbraith aka Rowling, Stone, Dorsey, Douglas-Home and some noir from Dominic Stansberry

Two from Woodrell, Lindsay from Scotland, another Valin - Stoner book and Bateman from Ireland.

Italian time - Camilleri and Carofiglio, Dermot Healy, Irish author passed earlier this year, David Henry Sterry - non-fiction account of his life and time as a male prostitute in LA

Scottish and Irish fiction, plus comedian Mark Thomas takes a poke at the arms trade.

Larry Brown, one of my favourites, Kim Wozencraft

Dan Simmons - homage to Richard Stark's Parker books, read it once and I'll read it again. Stark was Donald Westlake writing on a grumpy day.

Highlights or forgotten treasures.......not too many, but also nothing I'd turn my nose up at now either......Dan Simmons, Gerald Petievich, Charles Williams.

Assuming time allows - another 50 next week

  1. I'd not thought of Peyton Place as crime fiction before, but I guess it covers pretty much everything!

    1. Vicki, it might be a stretch maybe. My blog friend, Prashant ( http://chesscomicsandcrosswords.blogspot.co.uk/) wrote about it a month or two ago so I went and looked it up, and feeling nostalgic - vaguely remembering the TV show growing up - I thought I would have some of that!

I would reckon maybe 15-20% of the library, could possibly fall outside the parameters of crime fiction......biographies, history, current affairs, literature, sport etc.

  2. Like Vicki, I'm impressed to see Peyton Place there. I noticed Boston Cream - that's the name of a cake, like my Lady Baltimore entry last week, you could have done a matching blogpost, books-named-after-cakes-named-after-cities. Is that THE Jim Thompson writing about Ironside? Very surprising. I used to love Ironside, I am intrigued by this.

    1. Yes it is THE Jim Thompson. There's a fantastic blogpost on this one I only just found. Link at the end. I can dimly recall watching this as a family. My dad was a fan - and TBH there wasn't an awful lot of TV, especially American TV he would be bothered to watch - IRONSIDE was one of the exceptions.

    2. PEYTON PLACE - blame Prashant!

BOSTON CREAM - never knew it was a cake. Spookily I was/am going to do a 2 BY post tomorrow by the author with this book. I checked his other titles I don't think they are cakes! BUFFALO JUMP, HIGH CHICAGO, MISS MONTREAL........or are they.

  3. Col, it's good to seen Deighton and Sanders in the tubs. I'm planning to revisit at least some of their novels.

    1. I will be finding a few more Deighton's as I go. Definitely the one and only Sanders on the shelves (tubs) ..... for now at least!

  4. Col - Oh, I see you have a Camilleri there. That's a series I like very, very much. I know how time goes, etc., but I do hope you get that one.

    1. Margot, Camilleri's turn will come one day, just don't know when. I read the first years ago and enjoyed it, just haven't been back to him yet. I think I have possibly got the first 10 in the series......if my brains were made of dynamite - I wouldn't have enough to blow my hat off! Madness

  5. You don't need any new books, Col. Plenty to read there. Just in that one tub.

    1. Tracy, you are so right. It's kind of embarrassing doing this logging lark. I'm enjoying it as I'm re-discovering old forgotten books, but it's a bit humiliating airing the idiocy of my habit. I could read my way through the library a tub at a time and never need to buy another book in probably two lifetimes.

    2. Don't worry, Col, I have many plastic containers of books in my garage in addition to bookshelves inside. I have the same problem just continuing to buy books. I get frustrated because I can only read a limited number of them a month.

    3. I'm going to seriously try not to buy anything or request anything for November and December. If I'm offered something - maybe a different story!
