JANUARY 2015 - ADDITIONS TO THE LIBRARY.......SOME OF AT LEAST......

A fair few came into the library during January, but seeing as some were ordered in late 2014, some were from publishers and I won a competition which brought me three books I'm not going to beat myself up over it!

Here's some of the stash......

Loved his book The Striver late last year and he was kind enough to do a Q+A post - Mr Hard-boiled New York!

Fourth Samuel Craddock mystery - courtesy of Seventh Street books!

Competition win. I loved Spencer back when I discovered the crime fict. genre!

Non-fiction from Mr Westlake with a Mr Block intro!

Loved his previous novel Pike!

Courtesy of Seventh Street again!

1971 book re-issued!
Love the cover - freebie/slash competition bonus!

Looks great - remaindered in Poundland!

Competition win - apparently some of these are recently discovered stories.

Blame Tracy K - a touch of espionage, I think.

Got the second in the series also!

  1. Col, these are books with great covers. I liked the Jerome K. Jerome cover too and it's a book I have been meaning to read for a very long time.

    1. Thank you - I will probably read the JKJ book at some point, don't know when though.

You ought to check google images for PULP THE CLASSICS! They have really done an excellent job on creating fantastic covers for some classic books. They would make me more inclined to pick a copy up........the power of cover art!

  2. Great to see a new Terry Shames out, I'll have to get on to that. Just thinking about the Jerome K Jerome book makes me smile, it is very funny and deserves its classic status (with a bit of judicious skimming).

    1. Apparently there's another one later in the year......does she never sleep?

I think I will be more inclined to read it if it is funny, otherwise "CLASSICS READING" has me thinking like I've rewound 35 years and ended back up in a classroom.

  3. That's a nice lot you've got there, Col! A Westlake, a Parker, some Hammett...yes, you've got your hands on some good 'uns. Hope you'll enjoy.

  4. I love the title NO CONTROL. That is me and buying books. Glad to see that you are going to try Victor Canning. I will be reading more of his books. I haven't started on the Terry Shames series yet. Surely this year I will get there.

    1. I hadn't made the leap to that title, but I'll claim NO CONTROL also! Canning I'm looking forward to with trepidation .....what if I love them (8 or 9 or 10 book series?) ..I stopped my purchasing at number 3! (SOME CONTROL then!)

I would love to hear your take on Terry Shames and Samuel Craddock - but no pressure from me - you have loads of challenges and books already and we all have extremely limited time in comparison.

  5. Good thing you didn't spend too much on Holy City because it was boring. I read it two years ago I think. But I did read it. Hopefully you'll have more success with it. That's the only book I recognized in your list.

    1. Aaaaargh........oh well. Like you say I may have better luck and at a £1, not too much lost, only the time spent reading if it isn't great

    1. Two votes for this now, though I have been told off-line that Three Men in a Bummel is better! Yes/no....discuss

BUMMEL is available via Project Gutenburg. I suppose because of its age BOAT is also, though I haven't checked.

  7. Holy City does look pretty yummy -- I'll have to keep an eyes out for it. And Victor Canning? Now there's a blast from the past!

    1. John, I thought it looked good. Keishon commenting above didn't like it too much.....the juries out.

Victor Canning - definitely someone I can recall seeing in bookshops 30 or more years ago, but I've not read him yet
