Hi Col, it's good to have you back, blogging and baiting us with a pile of books. You know, someone should hold you down to that embargo! Where are the holiday pictures?
ReplyDeletePrashant cheers, I'm not sure if the embargo will ever stick but I ought to at least try and get more out than in going forward. I'll probably do a holiday post in the next week or so when I've caught up on a lot of things.
DeleteCol - Who needs an embargo anyway, right? And you've got a lovely lot of books there, too. I'm especially keen to see what you think of the Kitchin.
ReplyDeleteMargot thanks. Stumped is one I'm definitely looking forward to.
DeleteCol, I am interested in knowing where you store all of these unread ones (maybe you already told us?). My unreads sit in stacks beside the bed where they silently yell at me about reading them before I buy more. I had resolved to not buy any in August and got three which is pretty good. September brings the local used book sale where I hope I don't find much.
ReplyDeleteHalf of what came in were e-books so it sort of looks worse than it is. Apart from one small 2 shelf bookcase downstairs all my books, magazines, papers, articles etc are in the attic (which is a pain), because I can't access them instantly. The books I have started sorting into blue plastic tubs rather than collapsing stacks of cardboard boxes. The tubs are maybe 30 inches long by 18 wide and I have boxed 50 at a time in these - so I can get a fix on how many books I actually have. It's an ongoing work in progress which hasn't yet completed, though I'm not sure if I really want to know the final total as it would be irrefutable evidence of the ridiculous nature of my book collecting.
DeleteI hope you get at least 50 each at the book sale!
Looking forward to all of your reviews on these, but the one I am most curious about is A Wasteland of Strangers by Pronzini. You know Glen and I are big Pronzini fans but I have not read any standalone books by him.
ReplyDeleteI am not even going to think about all my stacks of unread books and how the September book sale will make them even taller.
I have a couple of his standalones which I'm looking forward to, this one and BLUE LONESOME. I don't intend to acquire any more though.
DeleteI'm hoping you get a large number in September, so I won't feel so bad myself!
I am hoping I don't get too many in September, so I can quit feeling anxious. I had started counting my unread books but was held up by various matters. I want to know how many I have. Too many, I am sure.
DeleteIt's kind of scary TBH, I'm not sure if I want to reveal the full extent of my obsession (or even know myself). I'm interested in knowing others though - a bit of a comfort blanket for me I think.
DeleteHope you had a great holiday, nice to have you back. Of those above, the Terry Shames obviously grabbed me - those kind publishers have sent it to me, looking forward to it though I have to catch up an earlier one first! I think we'd all like to know the estimated total of your unread books... go on, give us a figure!
ReplyDeleteMoira, it was fantastic thank you. Glad to hear you have the Shames book also.
DeleteHmm..... I could calculate the number of books I have conservatively, though the true unread figure would be more problematic. I only starting disposing of books read in 2008 at a guess and anything I kept at that point was saved for a re-read or hadn't been got to. I have sorted in excess of 3000, so the final library total is probably closer to 4000, maybe half unread. Calculate 120 a year for reading, maybe 35 years to cull the shelves.....am I truly mad?
The Kitchin cover caught my eye, as did the Ashley, purely on nice clean designs. Calculating the number of books I could read even if I never bought one more ever again is making me anxious now! ;-)
ReplyDeleteVicki, it is a bit scary really, but we're all in good company. Both covers above are books from 280 Steps. They obviously have a great design team, as they are all striking pieces.
