AUGUST 2022 - FILMS (CINEMA)

A light month with only three films viewed ...

I did enjoy them all and would be happy to see them all again at some point.

Bullet Train (2022)

Good fun. Probably touch and go whether I preferred the book to the film. I read the book by Kotaro Isako last year and enjoyed it. Thoughts here

Brad Pitt is hilarious as is Channing Tatum in a brief cameo. I always enjoy seeing Michael Shannon on screen.

SYNOPSIS
Based on the Japanese novel, Maria Beetle by Kotaro Isaka, five assassins find themselves on a fast-moving bullet train from Tokyo to Morioka with only a few stops in between. They discover their missions are not unrelated to one another. The question becomes, who will make it off the train alive and what awaits them at the terminal station?

Nope (2022)

A bit weird, a bit scary, a bit what's happening here then. I liked it.

DIRECTORS
Jordan Peele

CAST
Steven Yeun, Michael Wincott, Brandon Perea, Daniel Kaluuya

SYNOPSIS
“What’s a bad miracle?” Oscar® winner Jordan Peele disrupted and redefined modern horror with Get Out and then Us. Now, he reimagines the summer movie with a new pop nightmare: the expansive horror epic, Nope. The film reunites Peele with Oscar® winner Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Judas and the Black Messiah), who is joined by Keke Palmer (Hustlers, Alice) and Oscar® nominee Steven Yeun (Minari, Okja) as residents in a lonely gulch of inland California who bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery. Nope, which co-stars Michael Wincott (Hitchcock, Westworld) and Brandon Perea (The OA, American Insurrection), is written and directed by Jordan Peele and is produced by Ian Cooper (Us, Candyman) and Jordan Peele for Monkeypaw Productions

Orphan: First Kill (2022)

More thrillerish than horror I thought, which worked well for me, as I'm not one for out and out frights. I liked this more than my wife or daughter did.

SYNOPSIS

One of cinema’s most recognisable villains returns to the big screen in Orphan: First Kill. Esther’s (Isabelle Fuhrman, Orphan) secret may be out but this time around there’s more to this psychotic young girl than meets the eye. Escaping from the psychiatric facility that housed her, Esther hides in plain sight by assuming the identity of a missing American child whose mother (Julia Stiles, Dexter) is matriarch to one of the wealthiest families in the United States. Will Esther’s thirst for blood destroy the strong family ties or will she discover that even a mother will cross the line to protect her family?

  1. I've been hearing about Nope, Col, and that it's good. It does sound like a strange sort of film, but that doesn't have to mean 'bad!' Glad you enjoyed your viewing.
