HOLLY RAE GARCIA - PARACHUTE (2022)

Synopsis/blurb...

Angela Rodriguez and her friends aren’t sure what they want out of life now that they’ve graduated high school, but they think there is plenty of time to figure it all out. When a trip to an abandoned elementary school leads to a break-in, they discover an old gym parachute.

Raising the fabric above their heads, the group expects it to balloon out around them like it did when they were younger. But instead, the parachute reveals alternate universes and terrifying worlds.

There’s only one rule…

DON’T LET GO

A fantastic one-sitting read which offers excitement, thrills and horror in equal measures and is a testament to the author's vivid imagination in making me belief it could all be so real.

A group of teenage friends get a little bit high and break into their old school. A gym parachute in the abandoned school rekindles more innocent times when they didn't have a care in the world and life was less complicated.

This is no ordinary parachute. This one opens a door to different worlds and strange terrifying experiences which are fraught with danger, especially if you lose touch with the fabric of the chute. They all go under and out. They all don't come back.

I'm not the world's biggest horror reader or fan, but I do like dipping my toes in now and again. I think what I really enjoyed here was the increase in fear and tension with each subsequent journey out into the unknown. Different worlds are revealed when the remainers are desperate to get back to one in particular.

There's a real sense of teenage angst to this. Angela, our main character has a boyfriend in the group, but has also been recently involved in with the newest addition to the circle.

Relationship dynamics, tension, guilt, innocence, friendship, trust, loyalty, fear, loss, anger, regret, mistakes, poor choices, grief, death - a lifetime of emotions experienced in the course of a day.

4 from 5

  1. I don't generally go for horror, myself, Col. But if it's done very well, it can be a good experience. And I give authors credit when they can create an alternate world like that and make the reader believe it's all possible. Glad you enjoyed this.

    1. Margot, I'm a bit like you. It's not my first choice of reading genre, but I'm happy to try it on occasions. It was worth it this time around.

  2. Sounds good! I think as long as the story is about people, genre doesn't matter.

    1. I think you would enjoy this one mate. I don't stress over genres really, but I suppose I note them. Characters and relationship dynamics I think shade it for me over plot. If you don't empathise or relate to the people the book is a waste of my time.
