GLENN McGOLDRICK - IDLE HANDS (2022)

Synopsis/blurb...

"I didn’t think the police would do much, they’d just put the hoodie in a locker and forget about it. Maybe if I could show them the note, they’d know that I wasn’t just making this whole thing up."

In this chapter of the Dark Teesside series of short stories with a twist, the events unfold in Thornaby and Stockton...

Brought to you by award winning author Glenn McGoldrick, creator of the Dark Teesside series.

Another enjoyable short offering from Glenn McGoldrick.

Unemployed Mark finds a note in the pocket of an abandoned hoodie when out on a cycle ride. The note is not for him, but it causes him some concerns which he discusses with his wife. Does he go to the police or not? Would they think him an idiot and mock him for wasting their time? In response to his meddling, the next day he receives his own communication in the form of a plain envelope through his door with a photograph of his son's school. Chilling or what?

It's quite a thoughtful story, one which leaves many questions unanswered. I liked the open-endedness of the outcome though as it allowed me to speculate on what might happen next, as opposed to feeling a sense of frustration over the ambiguity of the ending.

Very good.

  1. Oh, that is a scary thought, Col - getting a 'photo like that of your child's school. It sounds as though this is a well-crafted story, and there is something about leaving some questions unanswered. When it's done well, it really does encourage the reader to think. Glad you enjoyed this.
