Col, your book tubs are getting eclectic as you go along. Here there are far too many authors I haven't read, and heard of. I'm going back to check out your Tub 32 — missed it last week.

DeleteYou've got quite a lot of interesting ones there, Col! So pleased you have the McGeachin. I will say I'm a very big fan of his, and I truly hope you'll like that one. He's also done the Charlie Berlin series, which I also recommend.
ReplyDeleteMargot I got the FFAF book after it appeared in a couple of your posts. Charlie Berlin sits on the kindle! 2016 reads hopefully.
DeleteCol, I'll be interested in your take on Henry Chang in general (there are four so far in his series) and the Peter Quinn. Have read and liked both. Plus you have a Pronzini Nameless and Marshall Yellowthread Street in this batch. You can't ever go wrong with those two.
ReplyDeleteGlen, I think I have the first 3 Chang's so need to locate the beginning of the series. Nameless has been sadly ignored for a year or more now and Quinn and Marshall haven't been got to yet. I think there's an earlier Quinn book that I will go with first, but when...... who knows...
DeleteVery impressed you have the Alastair Macleod - I did blog on it, it is one of my top 10 books of all time. And Christianna Brand, Green for Danger, which I was equally surprised to see, is one of my top 10 all-time best crime novels.....
ReplyDeleteUntil I was collating the details I hadn't realised the Brand book was part of a series, have you read others of hers?
DeleteI think I've read all of them - they vary a lot. She has the same policeman, Insp Cockerill, in several of them, but tbh they don't really feel like a series, the interest is always in the household or family where the murder is rather than the investigator (though he's a good character). I like them, but I think Green for D is the only one you might enjoy....

DeleteInteresting list of authors. I didn't recognize anyone other than Ruth Rendell. How many tubs of books do you have left? Where do you keep all of these tubs? Where did you acquire all of these books? Have you thought about selling any? Do you have any that are worth any money? that have become collector's items? Does your wife go through there to find her next book to read?

DeleteThey are all lined up in my boarded attic in rows about 5 high maximum - lower at the edges of the loft because of sloping eaves.
For the past 20 plus years I have always bought more than I read, so I have gradually built up the numbers. I actually buy a lot less now than I used to. I used to buy Amazon, Abe, Ebay, charity shops and new. Plus I was member of a swapping club on the net.
I have tried selling over the years, but TBH no one wants to buy. Books sell for a penny on Amazon and unless you set up as a trader and pay a fixed monthly fee, you will be out of pocket because postage is horrendous over here. I listed maybe a dozen or so a few months ago on ebay at minimum price and no one was interested - which kind of makes me sad. I'll end up taking them to charity shops.
I have a few that are probably collectible, and maybe worth a few quid, but again it's dependent on finding someone who may be interested in what you have. Around my way there probably aren't going to be too many takers for a loose leaf 40's copy of some Charles Willeford poems - Proletarian Laughter, or his Ubiquitous Roach Clip. As I'm logging I might few a few scarce-ish titles, but nothing that'll make me rich!
My wife's tastes are more mainstream than mine - Coben, Gerritsen, Barclay with the odd exception. I'll read what she reads, but the reverse isn't necessarily true. She's more of an impatient reader - slow burner books don't do it for her.
I must get back to Charlie Muffin. I think I'm over the shock of the first one now, surely?
