Highlights.... I do like
Lawrence Block and his
Matthew Scudder books, I reckon I will also enjoy the
Arthur Lyons books which are part of his
Jacob Asch PI series which came out in the 70's, 80's and 90's.
Not yet tried Reginald Hill or Michael Dibdin.......I got these free from someone who was getting rid .... they should be good....when I find the time!
Lowlights.... nothing particularly, though I do wonder when I will read the
Geoffrey Robertson - Justice Game book, or
Butler's The Rotten State of Britain.

Col - I was going to mention the Block novels too - I think that's a great series. And I really do hope you'll enjoy the Dalziel and Pascoe novels. To me, that's a terrific police procedural series. The Dibdins are good, too, in my opinion. Oh, and I like that title: Something Nasty in the Woodshed...
ReplyDeleteMargot - there's a lot here to get on with. I think I will enjoy most of them, assuming I finish cataloging and can start reading a bit faster! SOMETHING NASTY IN THE WOODSHED - probably the best title in the bunch, and it was the clincher when I bought it!
DeleteCol, I have a paperback of A WALK IN THE TOMBSTONE but not with the same cover. Mine is white/off-white though I don't remember what's on the cover. I'm curious about THE WARRIORS as I have never heard of the author.
ReplyDeleteI reckon TOMBSTONE must have had many many printings over the years since it originallly came out. I'd be more surprised if we had the same edition I think!
DeleteYURICK - I just looked up - Jewish writer from New York, now deceased. Had about 5 or 6 novels out - THE WARRIORS was from the mid-60's and was released as a motion picture in 1979. I absolutely love the film......gangs, violence, friendships, betrayal, teenage hoods...my cup of tea!
Col, the film version sounds good and I'll probably have more luck with it than the book.

DeleteYou certainly mix them up Col, that's a very varied selection. A Kyril Bonfiglioli book has just been turned into a film starring Johnny Depp - it got terrible reviews. I tried one of the books years ago, and absolutely hated it: throw-across-the-room hated it. Of course you may love him!
ReplyDeleteI think there's a bit of a blurb from Stephen Fry on the back cover of the Bonfiglioli which also helped sell it to me - that and the 50p price tag! Throw across the room loathing - I ought to move it up the pile then! I'll check out the Depp film, though I'm not a massive fan TBH.
DeleteThere is a lot of variety in this bucket, as Moira points out. I am interested in Arthur Lyons, but I cannot remember where I heard of him. I just looked him up and now I am even more interested... so thanks.
ReplyDeleteI reckon Lyons was one of those kind of mid-list authors you used to see on the shelves maybe 25 years ago, perhaps 30. I always used to pick-up NO EXIT PRESS books - a crime fiction imprint in the UK.
