Looking forward to Charles McCarry, Peter Steiner and David Downing in particular. I'm also happy to have located Varenne's Bed of Nails and a couple more Pascal Garnier slim books as I have enjoyed reading both recently.

I've read the first David Downing that 'train station' series - very atmospheric and I really must read the rest.

DeleteAm I to blame for Hijuelos ;) ? Quite a few here I'm familiar with - I'm a big fan of Barry Maitland, and it might be the kind of book where our tastes collide. The cover and title of the junkie book are most off-putting. And I read a different book by Tim Gautreaux last year and disliked it so much I couldn't even blog on it - you'll probably love him, thinking about it! I'm off to investigate AD Scott, don't know the name at all, but worth a look it seems.

I have a couple of Gautreaux books but he's untried as yet.
AD Scott I did a "2 BY" post on last year and you liked the sound of her...50's or 60's Scotland from memory set in and around a newspaper. It appealed because of your journalistic background
You've got quite a lot of good stuff here, Col. I think you'll like the Garnier. And I happen to be a fan of the Tarquin Hall series; hope you'll enjoy it.

DeleteTarquin Hall - I have heard of but have never tried and don't know too much about, but felt I should scratch this particular itch at least once!
Thanks for the shout-out of my first novel, The Death of Tarpons--this one's my wife's favorite. It's about 85% autobiographical. Hope you enjoy the read, Col!

DeleteOf all your latest showcased books, I've read only A.D. Scott (A Small Death in the Great Glen) which I found excellent for the period feel. I have at least the next one but they are longish books and I fear my current slow reading speed precludes me getting to it anytime soon.

DeleteYes - the Scott books resemble house bricks, but I think I'll enjoy them when I eventually get around to trying. I'm trying to calculate how many years until I can retire and devote some serious time to my reading addiction.......too far away, I'm afraid.
Col, I see a lot of good books by authors I have and haven't read read. Of the latter, I want to read Tarquin Hall whose series is set in Delhi, I think. I'm also curious about "Waiting for the Evening News."

DeleteWhilst I was recording this one after posting, I realised that I have the same book twice by Higgins - different editions. I'll have to swap this one out, dispose of and replace, other-wise having a tub of 49 will niggle!
Now how did I miss this one? Maybe because Glen commented and I thought I had too. Lots of books here I want to read... and some I have read. Glen did by a Pascal Garnier book recently based on one of your reviews.
