That's a Philip Kerr I've not heard of. Wasn't terribly impressed with his latest (contemporary set one - 'Research') but I would definitely return to his historical ones.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen any good write-ups for his latest, so I'll avoid I think. I hadn't heard of this one myself until I saw it second hand in a charity shop recently. I still need to start the Bernie series!
DeleteOK you grabbed my interest with 'the best detective story ever' so had to go and look it up. I'm amazed that I've never heard of it, it sounds quite the book, I may have to read it. Very intriguing - why isn't it more famous?
ReplyDeleteBoom - glad you like the look of the Smith book. Why isn't it better known? Not too sure to be honest - it seems fantastic, albeit a bit lengthy. Brash Books are re-publishing in Feb 2015 on kindle. Otherwise it doesn't appear to be that easy to come by cheaply for a second hand book. I'll read it early next year I reckon.

DeleteCol, A PRAYER FOR DYING is a good book but I don't remember reading HELL IS ALWAYS TODAY though it sounds familiar. I'll have to check it out. I like the way Higgins titles his novels.
ReplyDeleteI think I have only read the one Higgins book in all my years reading - title escapes me. I picked these up on your recommendation - not specifically these titles, but because you regard him as one of your favourite authors. I'll get to them at some point!
DeleteCol, Higgins' early novels are his best, especially the period 1969-1975. I think a young Mickey Rooney played the lead role in the movie adaptation of A PRAYER FOR DYING.

DeleteRourke-Rooney ? Regardless I don't think I have seen the film - is it any good? Did Harrison Ford play Jack Ryan in something - was that based on a Higgins book, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

DeleteCol, I agree, Harrison Ford makes a better Jack Ryan than Alec Baldwin does in Tom Clancy's THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. Tracy covered the book-to-movie in her latest post. The film version of A PRAYER FOR THE DYING is rather boring.
DeleteI don't think I have seen the post yet, I'll head over in a bit. I quite like Harrison Ford as an actor. He's been in some decent films - not least as Indiana Jones. I won't go out of my way then to try and see APFTD.
