The Hard-Boiled
Detective Statement Series celebrates the tradition of old-school detective
fiction.
The series features
the perilous cases of our P.I. hero as he seeks truth, justice, and sometimes a
living. He tackles dishonest dames, manipulative mugs, cagey crooks, and plenty
of victims. There's always plenty of victims. His period is timeless--call it
1929, 1939, 1949. Sure.
Each story is our
detective's statement to the police. Seems the coppers like a full report after
any kind of malfesance--ain't that rich? The statements are in his own words,
of course, and he spins a good yarn.
Ben Solomon is promising to produce three stories monthly
for fans of old-school detective fiction. Three stories monthly from a
non-writer's perspective seems a tall order, but so far he’s been churning out
stories for 10 months or so and the inspiration hasn't dried up.
I read the first three he released over the course of
November and they were well-written and entertaining enough, filling a small
gap in my reading schedule when I was between books. I’ll be reading more of
the stories in the coming months, as the author has kindly granted me access to
his case-files for a while. I’m hoping as the series continues that more intimate
detail is revealed about Solomon's detective and we get to see some more of his
personal life in addition to his work persona.

DeleteI am not interested in short stories (same old refrain), but the fact that they stick with one protagonist is more appealing.

DeleteCol—thanks for the gracious coverage. Interesting to read the takes here on the writer's side of things. For the record, the series is now in its 11th month with 33 yarns in the bag. (That's roughly 170,000 words, enough for 2–3 books. I've don't have figures on the number of murders and other crimes.)
